Transactional Support: Lead legal workstreams for capital markets transactions, including:
prime brokerage, margin lending, repo and securities lending arrangements, and derivatives transactions, including advising on ISDA, CSA, GMRA/MRA and related trading documentation frameworks
private placements, strategic investments, and structured public markets transactions, including equity-linked and financing-related structures.
Risk Management: Identify, assess, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks across trading and investment activities, including enforceability, collateral, netting, and cross-border considerations.
Collaboration: Partner closely with Public Markets investment professionals (including trading and structuring teams), as well as Compliance, Risk, and Operations, to support execution, manage risk, and enhance governance.
External Counsel Oversight: Manage relationships and budgets for external legal providers, including scoping mandates, overseeing deliverables, and ensuring cost-effective execution aligned with AIMCo priorities.
Our Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
Demonstrated subject matter expertise in capital markets, trading documentation, or derivatives, with a track record of leading transactional workstreams
Over 7 years of experience in corporate/securities law, including meaningful experience with capital markets transactions, trading and derivatives documentation (e.g., ISDA, repo, securities lending)
Experience in-house at an institutional investor, asset manager, or financial institution is an asset
Law degree (J.D., LL.B., or equivalent) from an accredited law school
Called to the Alberta Bar and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta
Intellectual curiosity and sound legal and commercial judgment
Excellent drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills, particularly in complex transactional documentation
Ability to translate technical legal and regulatory concepts into practical, business-oriented advice
Strong relationship-building skills and ability to collaborate across diverse stakeholders
Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight timelines and across time zones
High degree of ownership, resilience, and sound judgment in ambiguous and fast-moving situations
