The Impact You'll Make in this Role The Industrial Engineer - Manufacturing Productivity is responsible for designing, simplifying, and optimizing manufacturing processes to improve manufacturing productivity, quality, and safety. This role includes establishing stable processes as well as identifying and implementing appropriate automation solutions, including automated material movement and storage technologies. This role serves as an expert in process and material flow for 3M manufacturing plants, works cross-functionally with operations, engineering, quality, maintenance, supply chain, and external partners to reduce process variability, improve material flow, and deploy scalable automation technologies that support reliable and efficient production. Here, you will make an impact by: Simulate, simplify, and optimize material flow and manufacturing processes to improve throughput, reduce bottlenecks, and minimize non-value-added activity. Develop process maps, labor analysis, capacity models, and cost-benefit assessments to support project planning and execution. Lead process improvements that reduce variability and improve safety, quality, delivery, and cost outcomes. Identify and evaluate automation opportunities to improve productivity, consistency, and operational performance. Partner with cross-functional teams to define requirements, technical specifications, and implementation plans. Support equipment selection, testing, installation, and validation activities. Lead or support automation implementation projects, including equipment integration, workflow redesign, commissioning, and startup. Establish standard work, operating procedures, and training materials for new or improved automated processes. Monitor key performance indicators such as throughput, cycle time, uptime, scrap, and overall equipment effectiveness to measure results and identify further opportunities. Ensure compliance with applicable safety, quality, and operational requirements throughout project execution. Your Skills and Expertise To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications: Bachelor's degree in industrial engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a engineering field (completed and verified prior to start) Five (5) years of experience leading process improvement initiatives in a manufacturing environment, including process/material flow analysis, Lean manufacturing, root cause problem solving, and variability reduction in a private, public, government or military environment . Five (5) years of experience with manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, automation, and technologies such as robotics, AGVs, AMRs, and ASRS. Five (5) years of experience supporting equipment commissioning, validation, and production startup activities. Five (5) years of experience managing projects, analyzing data, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to implement manufacturing and operational improvements. Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include: Experience with process simulation, discrete event simulation, or digital manufacturing tools. Experience with MES, ERP, or SCADA systems. Lean and/or Six Sigma certification.
