Lead experimental structural biology and protein biochemistry within the Institute of Medicine
Develop and execute structural biology strategies (expression system, purification, structure determination method, etc.) to advance the Altos discovery portfolio from early target validation through lead optimization
Collaborate with our in-house cryoEM core facility and CRO-based crystallographic facilities to deliver high-impact macromolecular structures
Work collaboratively with cross-functional scientists to enable structure-based design on discovery programs across different modalities
Represent structural biology and protein biochemistry on cross-functional project teams, and contribute to building and progressing the pipeline
Manage external research activities conducted by CROs and collaborators
Mentor and supervise junior scientists and technicians
Requirements
PhD in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related discipline
6+ years of experience in biotech or the pharmaceutical industry supporting structural biology efforts in large- or small-molecule drug discovery programs
Proven track record of high-resolution structure determination using X-ray crystallography or cryoEM
Strong publication record demonstrating expertise in structural biology
Experience managing external CRO activities supporting protein production, X-ray crystallography, and cryoEM structure determination.
Strong leadership, collaboration, and communication skills
Demonstrated expertise in protein engineering or structure-guided protein design
Familiarity with structure-based drug design workflows and collaboration with medicinal/computational chemistry groups
Experience developing strategy for structurally intractable targets
Experience using structure prediction tools (e.g., AlphaFold, RosettaFold, Boltz) in an applied drug discovery setting
Ability to communicate the nuances of protein biochemistry to non-specialist stakeholders and executive leadership, ensuring alignment on project milestones
Experience in people management
The salary range for Redwood City, CA:
Senior Scientist I, Structural Biology : $172,400 - $221,000
Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
