Location Outpatient Center in Schaumburg Job Description General Summary: Provides complex medical interpreting services to aid patients and families with Limited English proficiency in their communication with Lurie Children's staff regarding health care needs and interventions. Provides support to uncertified staff as needed. Essential Job Functions: Provides complex medical and general interpreting services to aid patients and families with Limited English proficiency in their communication with Lurie Children's staff regarding health care needs and interventions. Accompanies and assists patients and families undergoing procedures and tests in multiple settings including registration, discharge, surgery and emergency. Serves as liaison between patient/families and hospital staff to convey patient customer service needs and culturally specific issues/concerns. Keeps accurate documentation of all patient encounters with the provided systems. Aids in the translation of outpatient discharge recommendations and other documents related to patient care when requested by management. Provides technical and systems level support to newer interpreters. Maintains and enhances technical information for staff use, including terminology and cultural resources. Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers, and others. Supports professional development for the department by presenting appropriate and related topics when required. Other job functions as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: National certification in healthcare interpretation Bachelor's degree in Language Arts, Psychology, Social Services or related field. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of the degree when the experience has been directly related to the functions of the job. Minimum of 3 years post graduate interpreting experience with at least one year in a health care setting. Ability to think proactively, acts creatively, and takes initiative appropriately. Strong communication, critical-thinking, and interpersonal skills. Bilingual verbal and written abilities, bicultural knowledge required. Ability to interpret and translate medical and healthcare terminology from English to the target language. Ability to articulate and respond to cultural differences as related to healthcare issues. Ability to work in a highly regulated environment with multiple demands. Experience in multi-cultural or health care setting, and experience with interpretation or translation required.
