Deputy Head - English, Maths & ESOL

Responsibilities

• Support the strategic leadership and operational management of English, Maths and ESOL provision across the College.
• Drive high-quality teaching, learning and assessment that improves student achievement and progression outcomes.
• Lead on curriculum planning, innovation, and quality improvement initiatives within the department.
• Support and develop teaching staff through coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
• Monitor learner progress and implement interventions that improve attendance, retention, and achievement.
• Champion inclusive practice and support learners with diverse educational backgrounds and needs.
• Build strong relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders to enhance curriculum delivery and learner experience.
• Contribute to self-assessment, inspection readiness, and continuous improvement planning.

Requirements

• A recognised teaching qualification (Level 4 or above).
• Significant teaching experience within English, Maths, ESOL, or related curriculum areas.
• Experience of curriculum leadership or departmental coordination within Further Education or a similar setting.
• A strong understanding of quality assurance processes and curriculum improvement strategies.
• Knowledge of GCSE and Functional Skills delivery and current educational priorities within FE.
• A passion for inclusive education and improving outcomes for all learners.
• Excellent communication, organisational, and people management skills.
• The ability to motivate and inspire both staff and students in a fast-paced educational environment.

Working collaboratively with curriculum teams, support services, and external stakeholders, you will ensure our provision remains responsive, engaging, and aligned to student and employer needs. To support your leadership responsibilities, this role includes up to 50% remission from teaching duties, providing dedicated time to focus on curriculum development, staff support, quality improvement, and strategic priorities across the faculty.
