Job Summary:
Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of the County of Kaua'i's fleet of heavy vehicle and medium and heavy construction equipment to increase knowledge of the trade and to develop skills for advancement to the journey level; and performs other related duties as required.
Examples of Duties:

Diagnoses motor knocks, noises, and other mechanical failures, and under general supervision, disassembles diesel or gasoline engines;
Under general supervision, inspects, removes, repairs, and replaces such parts as injection valves, cylinder heads, cylinder sleeves, pistons, rings, connecting rods, bearings, gaskets, etc.;
Under general supervision, repairs and overhauls major units such as brake systems, transmissions, etc.;
Receives on-the-job training to inspect, repair and overhaul complex hydraulic and electrical systems;
Receives on-the-job training involved in the repair of various specialized mechanical parts or equipment such as crawlers tracks and drivers, winches, bulldozer blades, scoops, excavating and loading bucket chains, power take-off and control mechanisms, centrifugal pumps, ladder and articulating booms, conveyor belts, etc.;
Operates various vehicles and equipment;
Under general supervision, may perform minor welding in connection with repair work; and
Performs other related duties as required.
