Experience working in railroad, tank car repair, or regulated industrial operations.
Strong working knowledge of AAR, DOT, and FRA rules and regulatory requirements.
Understanding of tank car design, components, and applicable regulations.
Demonstrated experience implementing quality improvement or safety initiatives.
Work Environment & Schedule:
Work is performed in an industrial railcar repair environment involves regular exposure to challenging physically demanding and environmental conditions.
Duties may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions
Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, heat, and noise is common
Job requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting, climbing, working at heights, and working in confined spaces
Must be able to enter tank cars through 20‑inch manway openings
Manual dexterity and physical coordination required for tool and equipment operation
Potential exposure to hazardous materials due to leaks or spills
Must comply with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols
On-site work arrangement: 5 days a week, with the ability and availability to work overtime as operational needs require.

The Area Manager leads an assigned area of shop operations, ensuring production requirements are met through effective coordination of workforce, materials, and equipment while maintaining accountability for overall performance in safety, quality, efficiency, and cost control. This role provides leadership to Supervisors and hourly employees and partners with cross-functional teams to achieve operational objectives and ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory and Company standards.
Primary Responsibilities:
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Direct the efforts of up to 3 Supervisors and associated teams to meet production schedules and performance expectations.
Review production schedules; establish work priorities and sequencing based on business needs, material availability, manpower, and production status.
Determine staffing levels and overtime needs to meet operational demands.
Monitor production performance and departmental efficiencies; identify issues and implement corrective actions.
Develop short- and long-range manpower plans to support production requirements.
Review appropriations and communicate new or unusual specifications; provide clear direction on execution of work.
Make recommendations regarding material deviations, tools, equipment, and fixture requirements to support production.
Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, quality, purchasing, and other functions to resolve issues such as labor constraints, material shortages, and equipment breakdowns.
Ensure the manufacture of high-quality products that meet all applicable standards, specifications, and customer requirements.
Implement and enforce company policies and procedures, including participation in labor relations matters as needed.
Promote a safe working environment by enforcing safety policies, addressing hazards, and developing employees to work safely and effectively.
Interpret technical drawings and blueprints to ensure accurate execution of work.
Ensure compliance with AAR, DOT, FRA, and Company requirements.
Maintain accountability for the quality of all work performed by direct reports.
Perform administrative duties including labor reporting and material tracking.
Support continuous improvement initiatives and quality programs, including Responsible Care Management System activities.
Provide coverage for reporting supervisors as needed on various shifts.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
3-5 years previous supervisory or leadership experience in a manufacturing, repair, or industrial environment.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and regulatory documentation.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
High degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and accountability.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a production environment.
Vision correctable to 20/30 for inspection and quality assurance activities.
