As a Principal Software Engineer at Morningstar, you will:
Own technical architecture and design for key product domains, making high‑quality decisions that balance scalability, performance, security, and long‑term maintainability.
Lead the modernisation of legacy Java and C# systems, redesigning them into cloud‑native, API‑driven platforms using contemporary frameworks and engineering best practices.
Build performant, secure, and elegant APIs using Node.js and modern JavaScript/TypeScript.
Partner with product managers, designers, and senior engineers to define solution approaches, technical roadmaps, and execution plans.
Use advanced AI‑powered development tools to improve engineering quality and delivery velocity.
Mentor and coach junior and mid‑level engineers, helping grow the next generation of technical leaders.
Establish and uphold high engineering standards through code reviews, architectural reviews, and technical direction.
Contribute to team‑level and organisation‑level engineering practices, DevOps improvements, and cloud adoption patterns.

Requirements
You bring deep technical expertise, sound judgment, and strong leadership instincts. Specifically, you'll have:
8+ years of professional experience building high‑quality web applications using modern engineering practices.
3+ years of experience designing or leading the development of cloud‑native applications on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
Advanced proficiency in Node.js, JavaScript/TypeScript, and modern API‑driven system design.
Expertise working with both relational and non‑relational databases, including designing scalable data access patterns.
A proven track record of making thoughtful architectural decisions and guiding teams through ambiguity.
Strength in mentoring, coaching, and upskilling engineers across multiple seniority levels.
A passion for building user‑centric products and solving complex technical problems in elegant ways.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate trade-offs, influence stakeholders, and guide technical discussions.
Familiarity with Agile/Scrum or Kanban delivery practices.
A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
