Work Environment & Schedule:
Work is performed in an industrial railcar repair environment involves regular exposure to challenging physically demanding and environmental conditions.
Duties may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions
Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, heat, and noise is common
Job requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting, climbing, working at heights, and working in confined spaces
Manual dexterity and physical coordination required for tool and equipment operation
Potential exposure to hazardous materials due to leaks or spills
Must comply with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols
Vision correctable to 20/30 for inspection tasks
On-site work arrangement: 5 days a week, with overtime as required.

Position Summary:
The Switchman operates a locomotive within a rail yard to move and position rail cars safely and efficiently based on switch lists. The role involves working in congested areas, operating track switches, and coordinating car movements while maintaining a strong focus on safety. The position also requires routine area upkeep, hazard awareness, and the ability to work independently in a physically demanding industrial environment. Duties may vary, and employees may be asked to perform additional job functions as needed.
Primary Job Functions:
Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to:
Operates locomotive to transport material and spot rail cars utilizing instructions from a switch list.
Regularly operates locomotive in a congested area and must use considerable caution to prevent damage to rail cars or accidents to employees.
Operates switches and directs flow of cars in rail yard.
Maintains area in a neat and orderly manner and reports work hazards.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent or the ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test
Valid Driver's License with no more than three moving violations in the past four years
Demonstrated mechanical aptitude
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision
Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and assembly documents
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
