Job Description As a Battery Thermal 3D CFD Virtual Propulsion Engineer (VPE), you will perform cell, module and pack level Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to optimize thermal performance of GM's Battery Systems under normal and abuse conditions (TRP). The candidate will conceptualize and develop a wide variety of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models to directly impact design and offset hardware testing. This role requires close collaboration with other CAE teams, while providing results and technical consultation to hardware design, development and validation engineers. Development of new and refinement of existing simulation procedures in the above domains is also a core responsibility. Job Description Hybrid work position: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. This position requires an employee to be onsite every other week. As a Battery Thermal 3D CFD Analysis Engineer, you will perform cell, module and pack level Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to optimize thermal performance of GM's Battery Systems under normal and abuse conditions including TRP. The candidate will conceptualize and develop a wide variety of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models to directly impact design and offset hardware testing. This role requires close collaboration with other VDDV (CAE) teams, while providing results and technical consultation to hardware design, development and validation engineers. Development of new and refinement of existing simulation procedures in the above domains is also a core responsibility. Primary Responsibilities: Perform cell, battery module and pack-level CFD TRP analysis Perform cell, battery module and pack-level CFD thermal analysis for early design and verification of battery concepts, designs and thermal management systems. Perform other Fluid dynamics analysis that includes VOF based simulations for TIM and other thermal material applications Conduct cell-level thermal analysis and TRP analysis while working closely with cell CAE team to integrate electrochemical simulation with battery system transient thermal behavior and support the estimation of cell life under different driving cycle and ambient conditions. Effectively communicate findings to internal/external customers using appropriate media. Meet or exceed deadlines for structured product development timelines, quality and cost. Collaborate with a broader engineering team for structured design integration, new proposals, problem solving, and system optimization. Provide requirements for improvements to advanced simulation activities to include CFD, Thermal, Structural and multi-physics. Participate and lead in CFD and other benchmarking activities. Required Skills and Experience: 5+ years of experience with simulation, design, testing, or release of propulsion related systems Experience with CFD software Familiarity or practical experience with the principles of vehicle propulsion system design, operation, or testing BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering required MS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with coursework in heat transfer and fluid mechanics preferred Preferred Skills and Experience: 5+ years of experience with CFD analysis Proficient with STAR-CCM+ or Simerics-MP+ CFD software Experience with CFD optimization tools Experience with test to model correlation Experience with programming in Java, Python or equivalent languages Linux experience in distributed computing environments Experience with the latest CFD visualization techniques Knowledge of Siemens NX CAD modeling Experience in coupling electrical and thermal analysis High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with others Familiarity or practical experience with the principles of vehicle propulsion system design, operation, or testing Experience on coupling electric solvers with thermal (Arcing-Voltage breakdown) Working knowledge of Battery thermal abuse and arcing GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role. Do not apply for this role if you will need GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future. This includes direct company sponsorship, entry of GM as the immigration employer of record on a government form, and any work authorization requiring a written submission or other immigration support from the company (e.g., H1-B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, J-1, etc). This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}. This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.
