This posting is for a Transportation Worker II position in the Davie County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Duties include, but are not limited to, installation of traffic and erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation and other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work, and monitoring manual tasks performed. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Emergency responses include traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. Must have ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform variety of other assigned duties. Additional Expectations: Working knowledge of the principles involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to, operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks and litter pickup. Employees must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required at the preceding level. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly. Employees must have the ability to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Positions are subject to emergency callback. Safety-toed shoes required. This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC05 / $33,902 - $59,327 Management prefers applicants with the following: Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies. Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures. Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper.
