Principal Systems Engineer

About the role

As a Principal Systems Engineer at Cloudflare, you will architect, scale, and secure the core infrastructure powering a significant percentage of all internet traffic. This is a high-visibility, heavy impact role where you will tackle complex distributed systems challenges, optimize low-level network performance, and guide the technical roadmap for our global edge network.

Responsibilities

• Architect & Scale: Design and implement next-generation distributed systems and infrastructure that handle trillions of daily requests with ultra-low latency.
• Technical Leadership: Serve as the technical authority for major engineering initiatives; mentor senior engineers and influence across organization boundaries.
• Performance Optimization: Diagnose and resolve complex, low-level bottlenecks across Linux kernel,networking stack, and hardware boundaries.
• Reliability at Scale: Drive architectural improvements to ensure the absolute resilience, security, and availability of Cloudflare's global edge.

Requirements

• Expertise: 10+ years of experience building mass-scale distributed systems, concurrent software, orhigh-performance networking infrastructure.
• Languages: Deep proficiency in Rust, Go, or C/C++.
• Systems Mastery: Strong systems-level knowledge (Linux internals, eBPF, TCP/IP, HTTP/3, androuting protocols).
• Track Record: Proven experience delivering complex, multi-quarter technical initiatives from conceptto production at hyper-scale.
