Description of Work POSITION PURPOSE The Assistive Technology Teacher is primarily responsible to the Principal of The Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS) for providing specialized instruction, consultation, and support in assistive technology for students with visual impairments. This position focuses on equipping students with the technology skills, tools, and strategies necessary to access the curriculum, develop independence, and prepare for postsecondary education, employment, and independent living. The Assistive Technology Teacher collaborates with instructional staff, related service providers, families, and external agencies to ensure appropriate selection, implementation, and effective use of assistive technology aligned with students' individualized needs. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Follow all School Board and GMS policies and procedures. - Provide direct instruction to students in the use of assistive technology to support access to the curriculum and daily tasks. - Provide direct instruction to students in the use of word processing, slide presentations, spreadsheets, and other productivity apps. - Conduct assistive technology assessments and contribute recommendations to IEPs and instructional planning. - Train students in the use of screen readers, braille technology, magnification devices, accessible software, and emerging technologies. - Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate assistive technology into instruction and classroom routines. - Provide consultation, coaching, and technical support to staff regarding accessibility and assistive technology implementation. - Support students in developing independence, self-advocacy, and problem-solving skills related to technology use. - Maintain accurate records related to assessments, services, equipment use, and student progress. - Assist with selection, setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of assistive technology devices and software. - Coordinate with families, vendors, and outside agencies regarding assistive technology needs and services. - Participate in IEP meetings, staff meetings, professional development, and school-based committees as required. - Stay current with emerging assistive technologies and best practices in the field of visual impairment. - Adhere to district policies, procedures, and the North Carolina Code of Ethics for Educators. - Support and uphold the mission, vision, and values of The Governor Morehead School for the Blind. - Other duties as assigned by the administration.
