The Orthopaedic Technologist provides clinical support to hospital patients within the scope of practice of Orthopaedic Technologists. They provides administrative support for Orthopaedic Technology activities in the hospital.

Responsibilities
Provides direct patient care for hospital patients and Fracture Clinic patients
Assists orthopaedic surgeons with reducing fractures
Assists or removes dressings, sutures, staples
Applies, revises and removes casts for inpatients and outpatients
Fabricates, applies and removes splints, slabs, bandages and braces
Assesses levels of pain and/or swelling and instructs patients appropriately in methods of reducing these levels
Documents care provided according to hospital and the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists Standards
Provides specific patient/family teaching related to injury, therapeutic materials, ie. plaster vs synthetic cast, cast care techniques, possible complications
Sets up and checks traction equipment and bed frames
Ensures traction carts are fully stocked
Maintains ongoing professional development
Acts as a resource for orthopaedic practices and skills for patients and members of the health care team
Responsible for ordering supplies and maintaining equipment
Meets with surgeons and sales representative to ensure that products in Fracture Clinic are high quality and economical
Follows up with suppliers on products being ordered for patients
Ensures that all orthopaedic areas (Emergency, O.R., Fracture Clinic, orthopedic unit) have correct and adequate supplies
Develops, maintains, reviews and revises appropriate patient education material
Ensures equipment is safe and in good working condition
Provides resource information to hospital staff regarding orthopaedic equipment
Participates in continuous improvement projects
Develops and maintains regular statistical information
Primarily responsible for organizing and maintaining the Fracture Clinic patient flow
Liaises with the Orthopaedic surgeons to ensure appropriate patient scheduling in Fracture Clinic
Acts as a resource for new braces/splints/orthotics for physicians and rehabilitation staff
Liaises with Health Records and Diagnostic Imaging staff to ensure that Fracture Clinic processes function smoothly
Organizes the work schedule of the staff Orthopaedic Technologist
Orients newly hired orthopaedic technologists
Ensures scheduling of volunteers for each Fracture Clinic
What you bring:
Graduate of a recognized Orthopaedic Technologist Program
Minimum two (2) years previous clinical job related experience.
Registered member of the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists
Demonstrated leadership skills
Administrative - demonstrated experience in management of fracture clinics
Excellent interpersonal skills including skills in patient/staff teaching
Good organizational skills
Good computer skills
Function within the standards of practice for Registered Orthopaedic Technologists
Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning, professional development, and continuous quality improvement
Demonstrated excellence in communication, both written and verbal
