  • Career Growth: Starting as a Sanitation Equipment Operator I, you'll have opportunities to advance within the division as you gain experience and take on more responsibilities.
  • Essential Tasks & Responsibilities:
  • Operate Key Equipment: Safely drive and operate equipment used in solid waste collection, including automated side-loaders, rear-loaders, boom trucks, swap-loaders, and front-end loaders on assigned routes.
  • Supervise and Lead: Lead and supervise a two-man crew, ensuring the safe and efficient collection of solid waste.
  • Maintain Equipment: Conduct thorough pre-trip inspections, perform routine preventive maintenance, and ensure equipment is clean and well-maintained for optimal performance.
  • Report and Enforce: Report violations of the solid waste ordinance to the supervisor and ensure adherence to regulations and safety standards.
  • Collect and Dispose of Waste: Drive assigned routes to collect and dispose of refuse, yard waste, debris, junked furniture, and appliances, properly disposing of materials at established sites.
  • Collaborate with Crew: Work as a productive member of a solid waste collection team, assisting in all aspects of refuse removal and working to ensure timely service.
  • Log Work and Report: Use mobile devices to log work or any infractions for accurate reporting and tracking.
  • Engage with the Public: Answer questions from citizens regarding the Environmental Services Division's procedures and practices, providing friendly, knowledgeable service.
  • Ensure Safety and Compliance: Ensure all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.

Requirements

  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid North Carolina Class B CDL Driver's License
  • Clean driving and safety record
  • Ability to lead and direct others for extended periods in all weather conditions
  • Knowledge of safety standards and the ability to ensure compliance with OSHA and City policies
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Hearing/Speaking : Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public, both in person and via two-way radio or phone.
  • Visual Abilities : Must have the ability to perceive objects and surroundings clearly.
  • Physical Strength :
  • Medium to heavy work: Regularly exerting up to 50 pounds of force; occasionally up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Constant handling, reaching, and occasional fine motor work (e.g., picking or pinching).
