Responsibilities

  • The principle responsibilities of the Hemodialysis Assistant include:
  • Assisting the Registered Nurse in the care of patients in the Hemodialysis Unit
  • Priming, dismantling and disinfecting of dialysis machines; set up and prime off unit machines;
  • Performing transportation responsibilities via bed, walker and/or wheelchair
  • Dial sate sampling; stocking the unit and storage room with supplies
  • Assisting patients with weighing, washroom trips, transfers, heavy lifting, etc.
  • Adhering to and performing routine safety measures and preventative maintenance; performing departmental duties
  • Retrieving and documenting in patient's chart in addition to protecting patient records/information from all unauthorized persons
  • Ensuring general cleanliness of work area
  • Assisting the Registered Nurse and/or patient with other duties as assigned
  • Performing other duties consistent with the job classification as required.
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Ability to speak, read and write English
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Previous experience in assistance with patient care; direct or indirect patient care essential
  • Must be flexible to work any of the possible shifts
  • Previous medical/surgical experience an asset
  • Previous experience as a hospital assistant an asset
  • Technical experience or Dialysis Assistant course an asset
  • CPR an asset
  • Heavy lifting required
  • May be required to work at multiple areas as well as rotating shifts in emergency situations
