System Supervision: Monitor autonomous driving systems (ADS) while the vehicle is in motion, prepared to take manual control instantly if the system encounters a "disengagement" scenario.
Safety Operations: Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections, ensuring both the mechanical integrity of the truck and the cleanliness/calibration of sensors (Lidar, Radar, Cameras).
Data Logging: Provide detailed verbal and written feedback to engineering teams regarding system behavior, edge cases, and "comfort" maneuvers.
Logistics Management: Manage routes, fuel stops, and inspections via Electronic Logging Devices (ELD) in strict Steiner compliance with DOT/FMCSA regulations.
Dynamic Scheduling: Operate on a sliding schedule that includes overnight hauls, weekends, and holidays to ensure continuous data collection.
Safety & Defensive Driving
Active Monitoring: Maintain continuous situational awareness, acting as a redundant safety layer for the Autonomous Driving System (ADS) in complex environments like construction zones or heavy merging.
Proactive Intervention: Expertly identify edge cases (e.g., erratic behavior from other motorists, debris, or poor weather) and take manual control before the system reaches its operational limit.
Space Management: Ensure the vehicle maintains a safe "cushion" and follow-distance, overriding the system if necessary to adhere to the "150-foot minimum" rule for heavy-duty CMVs.
Shift Vigilance: Adhere to strict fatigue management protocols, ensuring high alertness during night shifts when biological rhythms are naturally lower.
DOT Regulations & Compliance
Regulatory Compliance: Maintain full compliance with FMCSA Part 395 and state-specific AV regulations (including recent updates like California's heavy-duty driverless testing permits).
Law Enforcement Interaction: Act as the primary point of contact for DOT roadside inspections and weigh station stops, explaining the autonomous system's status to officials if requested.
Incident Reporting: Assist in the mandatory documentation and reporting of any "disengagements" or system anomalies as required by federal and state oversight bodies
Pre-Trip & Post-Trip Inspections
Mechanical Verification: Conduct standard "Circle Checks" of tires (tread/pressure), brakes (lines/drums), lighting (high/low beams, signals), and coupling (fifth-wheel lock).
Sensor & Hardware Audit: Perform specialized inspections of the AV stack-ensuring Lidar, Radar, and Camera lenses are clean, unobstructed, and securely mounted.
Fluid & Leak Check: Use the CBD (Cracks, Bends, Dents) and ABC (Abrasions, Bulges, Cuts) methods to inspect engine hoses, steering components, and suspension.
In-Cab Systems: Test all on
