Under the general supervision of the area Section Heads and Laboratory Supervisor and according to established policies and procedures performs a variety of laboratory tests and reports data for the use in diagnosis and treatment of patients. May perform procedures across the major areas of the laboratory or concentrate in one area such as Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology or Microbiology. No supervision is required for specimen processing or reporting of patient test results. Major Responsibilities: Follows established protocols to perform various tests, including the most complex, for an assigned area. Provides guidance and consultation to Medical Technologist I's and Medical Lab. Technicians in the interpretation of complex or unusual test results. Interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinical condition in order to explain test results (normal/abnormal) so that appropriate action can be taken. Troubleshoots testing process discrepancies. Assists in development new test and quality procedures for assigned area. Ensures that test results meet requirements of the laboratory quality control program. Ensures preventative maintenance for equipment in assigned area. Performs moderately complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex equipment and instrumentation. May assist in the roll-out of new equipment and equipment modifications. Instructs technicians and technologists in the set-up and operation of new equipment and procedures. Ensures compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies. Instructs students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures. Maintains accurate records of tests performed, using computer-based systems. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: Bachelor's degree or successful completion of an accredited four-year school of Medical Technology. Preferred: ASCP certification as an MT is preferred. Experience/Skills: Required: Three years of related experience. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. FLEX - maybe required to travel to other locations and campuses per the needs of the department. Evenings- weekends and holiday coverage. On call maybe required.
