Job Summary The Cardiothoracic Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions primarily in the operating room (OR), consults, clinic, and acute care settings. The APP assists in evaluating and treating patients in step-down, floor, clinic, and consult areas, documenting all care and assessments. Under the supervision and direction of a physician, the APP performs physical examinations and specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including CABG, AVR, MVR, aortic surgery, VATS, robotic lung and mediastinal surgery, chest tube placement and management, wound suturing, and dressing changes. The APP supports physicians in diagnosing medical conditions, developing and implementing care plans, and prescribing appropriate treatments. Additional responsibilities include ordering, scheduling, and performing laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures (e.g., urinalysis, pregnancy testing, blood tests, x-rays), as well as communicating the purpose, preparation, and anticipated outcomes of procedures to patients. In collaboration with physicians, the APP coordinates consultations and referrals with other medical professionals and community resources. The APP also plays a key role in patient education, providing guidance on health maintenance, self-examinations, behavior modification, follow-up care, home management, medications, and other aspects of ongoing health and recovery.
