  • Functions professionally and independently as the Surgical Technologist Operating Room on a wide variety and in all stages of surgical procedures.
  • Maintains strict aseptic technique during set-up, patient draping and during surgical procedure.
  • Scrubs on surgical cases, participates in surgery by organizing the instrumentation to the surgeon, participating in surgical counts.
  • Selects and prepares the appropriate instruments , supplies and equipment for surgical cases .
  • Performs related activities under the direction of the surgeon .
  • Performs all counts with the circulating nurse according to Operating Room policy.
  • Manages all intraoperative medications in accordance with Operating Room policy.
  • Manages surgical specimens according to Physician's orders and Hospital policy.
  • Follows Operating Room procedures for the proper decontamination of instrumentation, equipment, and room turnover.
  • Assists in the positioning, moving and transporting of patients as needed.
  • Reports equipment and supply problems to the Charge Nurse, Service Lead or Clinical Nursing Director as needed .
  • Participates in decision-making activities related to evaluating and acquiring surgical equipment, instrumentation and supplies which may include collaborating with the Central Processing or supply chain.
  • Performs the role of Preceptor for staff in training and displays leadership qualities and acts as a role model and mentor.
  • Provides advisory supervision to section technologists through collaboration with the Service Line Nurse Manager and/or Clinical Nursing Director.
  • Participates in the ongoing and annual and ongoing performance appraisal process for surgical technologists within their surgical subspecialty.
  • Participates in the scheduling and training of other Surgical Technologist in collaboration with the Service Line Nurse Manager, Clinical Nursing Director or Professional Development Director.
  • Keeps abreast of new techniques and equipment within their surgical subspecialty and provides guidance and instruction to technologists working within their service line.
  • Conducts service specific education

Performs job duties according to the policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives of the department and hospital. D isplays high level abilities and advanced clinical practice in a specific surgical subspecialty. Assists in coordinating the services, techniques and teachings of those individuals assigned to specialty services in which technician has an expertise and is daily assigned.
