Assesses, plans, delegates, coordinates, implements and evaluates nursing care in managing a group of patients, serving as a primary nurse and/or accountable nurse, when designated by unit assignment and consideration of factors related to safety, effectiveness, competency, cost and impact.
Educates patient and family in health promotion and disease management using available resources.
Utilizes a working knowledge of pharmacology and safely administers medications according to United Health Services policy.
Shares in responsibility for productivity and effective resources utilization including staffing, time management, supplies and services.
Complies with all nursing practice standards, regulatory requirements, and United Health Services policies.
Actively participates in and supports the Nursing Shared Governance Model by supporting the Unit Council, participating in improvement initiatives, and contributing to peer review practices.
Actively engages in professional development, continuing nursing education, and completing all mandatory education requirements.
Integrates nursing research and current evidence into practice.

Position Qualifications
Minimum Required:
A graduate of an accredited school of Nursing
Current NYS RN License
Preferred:
Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing
Previous clinical nursing experience in an acute care or ambulatory setting
Professional certification in a related nursing specialty
Relevant skills certification (i.e., ACLS, PALS, TNCC) as required by home unit assigned.

Position Overview
The Med/Surg Observation Registered Nurse provides high‑quality, patient‑centered care in a fast‑paced environment focused on short‑stay evaluation and acute medical needs. The RN independently assesses, plans, delegates, coordinates, implements, and evaluates nursing care for a group of patients, serving as a primary or accountable nurse based on unit needs and patient acuity. This role includes educating patients and families, safely administering medications in accordance with United Health Services policy, and supporting efficient use of staffing, time, and resources to ensure excellent clinical and operational outcomes.
The RN upholds all nursing practice standards, regulatory requirements, and UHS policies while actively participating in shared governance, quality improvement, and evidence‑based practice initiatives. The Observation RN engages in ongoing professional development, supports new staff and students through a positive learning environment, and contributes to a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement on the night shift.
