About the role

As an Environmental & Sustainability Manager at Zekelman Industries, located in Chicagoland area in IL, you will play a key role in supporting environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives across facilities in the United States and Canada. Responsibilities

  • Support and manage environmental projects including air permitting, pollution control equipment, storm water, industrial process water, and waste management programs.
  • Conduct site audits, inspections, and fieldwork to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and company standards.
  • Develop improvement plans and coordinate environmental testing, sampling, and analysis activities.
  • Prepare technical documentation, internal reports, and external regulatory correspondence.
  • Coordinate and manage consultants and contractors to ensure compliance with project requirements and environmental standards.
  • Participate in technical meetings, prepare reports and presentations, and support regulatory inspections and communications.
  • Maintain environmental records, monitoring data, and compliance documentation to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to support continuous compliance of permitted systems.
  • Provide training and guidance on environmental compliance, pollution prevention, and sustainability practices.
  • Support environmental incident response activities, including spills and other emergencies.
  • Develop and support training programs and track completion through the learning management system.
  • Lead sustainability initiatives and implement waste reduction and cost-saving measures.
  • Lead and promote healthy and safe work practices as required by regulatory agencies and Company policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 4-5 years of experience managing environmental and regulatory compliance in a manufacturing environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of environmental regulations, including air emissions, hazardous waste, NPDES, and industrial water discharge.
  • Strong understanding of environmental monitoring, mitigation, and compliance practices.
  • Ability to analyze environmental data, perform calculations, and present findings effectively.
  • Experience working with environmental permitting, reporting, and regulatory agencies.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects across different locations.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work across teams and with external stakeholders.
  • Experience leading or supervising team members preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to multiple facilities across the U.S. and Canada (25-50%).
  • Ability to maintain regular, full-time, predictable onsite attendance.
