Staff Mobile Engineer - Platform

About the role

As a Staff Mobile Engineer on the Mobile Platform team, you will be responsible for building and maintaining the shared mobile infrastructure, frameworks, and tooling that power Betterment's applications. You'll play a key role in shaping the developer experience for mobile engineers across the company, ensuring that teams can deliver features quickly, safely, and sustainably. Platform engineering at Betterment enables engineers across the organization to ship great code with confidence. Our team works closely with product engineers to deliver cross-cutting capabilities, infrastructure, and frameworks that unlock faster delivery while maintaining quality. We tackle the most interesting technical challenges of scale, architecture, and developer experience to create an app platform that delights both our customers and our engineers. This role is based out of our NYC office. Below, we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment's total compensation package for employees. This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus. For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in-office attendance Monday through Thursday, weekly. A day in the life Build and maintain the shared React Native frameworks, libraries, and developer tooling that mobile product teams use to deliver customer-facing features Partner with engineers across engineering to improve reliability, performance, and security of our mobile apps Lead medium-to-large scale platform initiatives, balancing tradeoffs to ship high-quality solutions continuously and iteratively Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and fellow engineers to ensure platform capabilities align with business and customer needs Teach and Learn. As a Staff Engineer, we expect you to share your knowledge with new, junior, and senior engineers. Help mentor and grow our team professionally as well as learn from our leaders to level up your own talents. Solve "impossible" problems. Take your ideas to the next level right away. We experiment, iterate, learn, and repeat. Collaborate, with purpose. You'll work in small groups with other talented thinkers and figure out how to make Betterment's revolutionary software even better. Identify and address strategic technical challenges that have long-term impact across Betterment's mobile engineering organization Contribute to an engineering culture that values clean code, rigorous testing, pragmatic programming, and continuous improvement

Requirements

• Strong expertise in JavaScript/TypeScript and React Native development and familiarity with the underlying iOS and Android platforms. Experience with Flutter is nice to have!
• Experience designing and maintaining shared libraries, frameworks, or infrastructure for mobile applications
• Familiarity with GraphQL and mobile networking best practices
• Strong understanding of software architecture, scalability, and performance considerations in mobile apps
• Experience leading large platform migrations and driving adoption
• Ensure high standards for code quality, test coverage, accessibility, and performance
• Debug and resolve complex production issues across devices and OS versions
• Have a commitment to upskilling teammates through feedback, pairing, and mentorship
• Strong track record leading projects, driving adoption of platform improvements, and making pragmatic tradeoffs while maintaining quality
• Collaborative mindset and excitement to partner with teammates across multiple teams within engineering, design, and product
• Passion for software engineering, developer experience, and creating what doesn't yet exist
