This position supports federally funded social science field research through the USDA Forest Service's National Visitor Use Monitoring Program. The employee will conduct on site, face to face visitor surveys with national forest visitors as part of a temporary, project based data collection effort.
Duties may include visitor intercept surveys, field based survey administration, communication with recreation visitors, travel to assigned survey locations, data entry, coordination with project staff, and other related research support tasks as assigned.
Work is expected to occur during the 2026 field season, with exact start and end dates based on project needs, employee availability, and funding. The position is fully grant funded and not considered essential staff.
Duties/Responsibilities
Data Collection in the Field (70%)
Conduct visitor intercept surveys at designated sites
Follow standardized NVUM protocols to ensure high-quality data collection.
Use tablet computers, signage, and uniforms as provided.
Accurately record and upload survey data.
Travel and Independent Work (20%)
Travel independently to remote field sites across the forest.
Work without direct supervision in varied terrain and weather conditions.
Maintain communication with the principal investigator and research team.
Equipment Management and Reporting (10%)
Manage assigned field equipment and data collection tools.
Report survey counts and field notes as instructed.
Participate in training sessions prior to fieldwork.
