Hosts taped and live interviews, or two-ways, that air during local portions within Morning Edition. Books, researches, conducts and edits those interviews for air. Host news specials and coverage of special events for KUT News.
Participates in on-air fundraising and makes special public appearances as assigned by Program Director. Is on call to serve as anchor for special coverage during emergencies and in rotation for weekend editing duties.
Reports local news from KUT News for national programming as appropriate, participates in newsroom editorial and planning meetings, and participates in newsroom editing sessions and critiques set up by KUT Managing Editor.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent professional experience and training.
5 years of experience as an on-air host of a news magazine program.
5 years of broadcast journalism experience.
Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends, with the understanding that some extended hours may be required.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Requirements
Familiarity with public radio and NPR broadcast clocks.
News writing, reporting, digital recording, and production skills.
Strong on-air reporting, writing, and technical abilities.
Sound ethical judgment, with a firm commitment to objectivity, balance, and fairness.
Familiarity with Austin, Texas.
The ability to break news, engage audiences and expand one's source base with social media.
Working knowledge of FCC guidelines and requirements.
The ideal candidate will:
Demonstrate a confident, conversational on-air presence.
Have experience operating broadcast equipment and managing an audio board during live on-air shifts.
Be capable of working under deadline pressure in a live program environment, drawing on creativity and improvisation while maintaining accuracy, objectivity, and composure-all while hitting time posts, forward promoting content, and presenting news.
Have a proven record of producing daily news stories and locally relevant features.
Be proficient in audio editing with the ability to quickly turn around tape for broadcast.
Be self-motivated.
Salary Range
$68,000 + depending on qualifications

KUT runs "Morning Edition" unhosted from 4:00-5:00 a.m. and hosted from 5:00-9:00 a.m. KUT's "Morning Edition" host should plan to arrive in time to prepare for that morning's broadcast - usually by 4:30 a.m.

For the first time in more than 20 years, KUT is searching for a new local "Morning Edition" host. This person will connect listeners to NPR's national and international content while incorporating KUT and the Texas Newsroom's strong local and statewide coverage into the show each morning.
KUT is the leader in the Austin radio market and a flagship station in the national public media landscape. The station is consistently ranked first in listenership in Austin, led by the local broadcast of National Public Radio's "Morning Edition".
Purpose
To host local live network news program under the supervision of the KUT Program Director and to produce newscasts and news material such as interviews and reports under the direction of the KUT News Director.
