Must be at least 18 years of age and hold a valid drivers license for a minimum of 2 years.
Must be able to earn and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), minimum of a class B with airbrake and passenger endorsements. UNH Transit will train new bus drivers who do not hold a valid CDL within 3 months of hire.
Must maintain a valid Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Certificate.
Must pass drug and alcohol screening tests as mandated by Department of Transportation regulations, as well as a criminal background check and a motor vehicle search.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English, and communicate and work effectively with the public.
Ability to perform basic arithmetic and write legibly on all required documents.
Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing the operation of motor vehicles (including buses carrying 14 - 60 passengers).
Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this position.
Must be reliable, dependable and maintain excellent attendance and punctuality.

Under the general supervision of a designated supervisor, provide safe, efficient, and on time service through the operation of motor vehicles/transit buses as assigned. Must make simple and complex decisions regarding emergency, traffic, and customer services situations quickly. Ability to deal with stressful situations and drive safely despite distractions, including two-way radio conversations and passenger conversations/questions.
Duties/Responsibilities
Operates buses to transport passengers over established routes (transit routes, campus connector, Access, Medi-Cat, misc.) according to set time schedules as assigned. This includes:
Stops at designated points to load and/or unload passengers.
Safely load and unload passengers who use mobility devices, using the wheelchair lift and tie-down securement system.
Operates on-board computer for the destination signs and automatic stop announcements.
Operates vehicles to transport groups (i.e. dignitaries) around campus as assigned.
Utilize iPad to maintain statistical data for passenger counts, mileage and monitor fare boxes as required to ensure passengers are paying the proper bus fare.
Notifies the dispatcher/supervisor of detours, collisions, vehicle issues, or other incidents as needed.
Complies with all UNH policies, procedures, and performance expectations, as well as all Department of Transportation (DOT) policies and procedures.
Complies with all traffic laws and regulations.
Meets and maintains UNH's personal driving record requirements.
Completes a thorough vehicle check pre- and post-trip.
Checks vehicle fluids (oil, coolant, fuel, etc.) as required.
Fills out and submits the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) for every vehicle the driver operates.
Completes and submits written reports concerning accidents, incidents, and any other miscellaneous reports as required.
Depending on shift, may start up buses or close out buses, including fluid checks and reporting, fueling buses, cleaning interior and exterior of bus, etc. as directed.
Advises passengers of rules and regulations when necessary.
Other duties as assigned.
